Indian Artists

July 11th 2009 10:11
Astoundingly, when I was going through my omg-it's-contemporary-art thing with the New York Times' T Style magazines that are piled up in the back room, I never really though of Indian artists. Pretty amazing, since I hunt for indian influences in everything else that I do. Anyway, I recently read a time magazine article about the resurgence of indian contemporary art collectors Really Long Link and the photograph accompanying the article sparked my interest. I looked up a few of the names mentioned in the article

"acknowledged modern masters"
M.F. Husain
http://images.google.com/images?q=M.F.%20Husain&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi ; Really Long Link

and Amrita Sher-Gil
http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&hs=TEk&num=20&q=Amrita Sher-Gil&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=yXs 5Svf2JYWoM8zSgI8N&sa=X&oi=ima ge_result_group&resnum=1&ct=t itle ; Really Long Link

more : Really Long Link
all very obviously indian, all very diverse as is the country itself

and thus opened up a world of art that I had imagined in my mind but somehow didn't think existed. I want to live in India to experience the true blend of everything that is that country.

reading The Moor's Last Sigh [by Salman Rushdie] has intrigued me even more, there is so much intricate culture (real and fictional...) swirling in an evolving mass around the air above india.

when you are searching google images, rather than posting the link to the search result, click on "See full-size image" and that should have a neater url . . . then use the "insert link" button

alternatively right click and "Save As" an image as a JPG and save it to your computer and then upload it to your post using the "insert pic" button

Very cool. It is easy to get caught up in a Eurocentric perspective, and is important to look into different regions of the world for new influences for progress. Thanks!
